Since 2013, we have been continually expanding the central patent department of the thyssenkrupp Group at the Essen and Duisburg site. As part of this ongoing expansion, we are seeking experienced and committed

European Patent Attorneys
specializing in mechanical engineering, physics, electrical engineering or chemistry/process engineering, to work in our Steel, Elevator, Component Technologies and Industrial Solutions teams of patent attorneys.

Your role

As a European Patent Attorney accredited at the EPO and a member of the thyssenkrupp Intellectual Property Services Group which has numerous sites worldwide, you will look after all issues arising in the field of industrial property rights, including patents, trademarks and designs, in an international environment. You will advise internal clients and represent them in proceedings before the European Patent Office, the German Patent and Trademark Office and the German Federal Patent Court. You will be responsible for managing and coordinating external attorneys in the event of infringement proceedings and other litigation in the field of industrial property rights. You will oversee the work of junior staff and patent engineers and support those seeking to qualify as European Patent Attorneys.

• Processing notifications of invention, including carrying out and analysing patent searches relating to the prior art
• Drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications on a national and international level
• Providing advice internally on all issues relating to industrial property rights, including trademark law and employee inventor law
• Advising on development projects and cooperation agreements
• Analysing and carrying out legal evaluation of our own and others’ property rights, including preparing written opinions for the thyssenkrupp Group companies
• Assisting with nullity proceedings from a patent-law perspective and being responsible for managing infringement proceedings
• Drafting of licensing agreements
• Coordinating collaboration with external patent attorneys, lawyers and other service providers
• Shaping the IP strategy of the BUs within the scope of the annual IP dialog together with the respective R&D managers

Your profile

• Accredited as a European Patent Attorney (optionally with a qualification as a German patent assessor) with 3 – 5 years of professional experience in the field of industrial property rights (preferably in the patent department of an industrial company, alternatively in a firm of patent attorneys), including relevant professional experience of all important areas of work in industrial property rights
• Master’s degree or diploma in the field of mechanical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, chemistry/process engineering
• Very good written and spoken English
• Linguistic talent so as to be able to set out complex technical subject-matter in a clear and comprehensible manner
• High level of commitment and highly independent, autonomous style of working
• Thinking and acting in an economically focussed and goal-driven way
