Our everyday lives are becoming more and more digital: data is transmitted in record time via fiber optics and 5G, we travel with greater ease from A to B in self-driving cars, better results faster thanks to artificial intelligence.  All this puts huge pressure on the computing capacity and performance of IT systems – and the semiconductor industry faces the challenge of producing ever smaller, more powerful and energy-efficient computer chips.

Your roles and responsibilities


  • Support Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH in all patent-related matters

  • Analyze inventions together with technical experts, prepare decisions on inventions and patent applications and implement the decisions made

  • Manage patent prosecution procedures at the patent offices in close cooperation with the assigned patent attorneys in Germany and abroad, or handle the patent prosecution procedures directly

  • Support Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH to enforce its own intellectual property rights and to defend itself against third-party intellectual property rights by utilizing the legal procedures available in Germany and abroad.

  • Generate IP strategies for an internationally oriented market

  • Draft IP clauses for cooperation agreements and be a member of interdisciplinary negotiation teams



Your profile


  • You have successfully completed a technical or scientific university degree and preferably have experience in the field of mechatronics.

  • You have the qualification as German Patent Attorney or professional representative before the EPO

  • You have several years of professional experience in an industry patent department

  • You have knowledge of and experience with foreign patent systems, especially those of the USA and Asian industrialized countries

  • You can communicate well and reach reasonable compromises in interdisciplinary teams

  • You have a confident attitude and excellent English skills

  • You have a distinct ability to present complex issues in an understandable and convincing manner in German and in English
